CHAISE LONGUE

Project Description

The final stage of a bachelor degree is an occasion for an introspection about what that academic path was. It is a time when it will be possible to have defined what are the preferences of each one in the project activity, its scope of intervention, area specialty, materials and technologies, work methodologies, etc. And also an ultimate opportunity for, even within this learning period, deepen knowledge and experiences on a given subject or theme, whether that stems from some concrete need, whether out of simple curiosity.

This exercise thus poses the challenge to the student to be the one to also propose the statement of the project he intends to develop. However, it must be a equipment or a system of equipment that proves to be feasible, and therefore, for a situation or context of well-determined and real use (although the versatility and adaptability in use, whenever possible, are always considered as value added). Thus, the life cycle of the equipment must also be duly considered, seeking to define as much as possible the process of manufacture, distribution and access to users or markets, maintenance and end of life, both in its material aspect, technological and constructive, as in the social, or in the financial and economic.

Process Followed

For the creation of this product, a research was made around the conformation of wood, with an emphasis on plywood folding. To this end, some important historical factors were taken into account in the development of plywood folding technology, such as the products of Michael Thonet, a pioneer in the industrial methods of this field.

Another less industrial source that triggered my interest in this subject was a pair of students from the University of Aveiro who conceived a project called Beards on Boards, in which they insert the beard theme with the creation of longboards through the folding of plywood.

Wood bending is still an expensive process, showing obvious advantages and disadvantages both in the industrial aspect or in the artisanal side. The creation of this product raises some problems, as it requires complex means of conformation namely favorable temperature humidity conditions. It is therefore necessary to understand the means to develop this product.

Product Outcome

A chaise longue conceived integrally of Birch plywood, characterized by its curvature obtained by folding successive layers of plywood.
